Cypress Freeway Replacement Project
Caltrans

Challenge: Educate and inform the community about alternative transit options during reconstruction of the Cypress Freeway after it was destroyed during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

Role: Managed a full-time, full-service Public Information Office; implemented public awareness activities; and developed a congestion mitigation/Transportation Systems Management (TSM) program.

Result: A project that was more than just construction of a freeway; it was a prime example of concerned citizens working together with local government to shape their community. Caltrans won the California Transportation Foundation “Tranny Award” for excellence in transportation.

 

 

California High Speed Rail Program

California High Speed Rail Authority

Challenge: Explore public acceptance and feasibility of a $28 billion high speed rail system from Sacramento to San Diego.

Role: Conduct feasibility studies, including a ridership market/demand study, corridor evaluation and environmental constraints analysis, economic analysis, and financing options evaluation. Develop and implement a statewide public participation program, distribute statewide final California High Speed Rail Draft Program EIR/EIS, and manage statewide public hearings.

Result: Increased public awareness of the feasibility of high speed rail, with public concerns identified and incorporated into the project proposal, facilitating the development of a $9 billion bond measure.

 

 

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Retrofit Construction Projects

Challenge: Keep Bay Area commuters and transportation agencies educated, informed, and aware of all seismic retrofit and new construction activities on the bridge.

Role: Develop an extensive multi-year communications plan including agency coordination, community outreach plans, media outreach, and communication materials.

Result: An informed public, reduced traffic implications, and successful completion of complex construction elements in a major urban area.

 

 

CANAMEX Corridor Project
5 States (MT, ID, UT, NV, AZ)

Challenge: Coordinate with the Governor’s office and the Department of Transportation in the five states of Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona to develop a comprehensive plan for economic development and transportation efficiency within the CANAMEX Corridor.

Role: Conduct a public involvement program with outreach to local and state officials, and transportation, economic, environmental, business, recreation, educational, and technology interests. Specific outreach was conducted to Native American and environmental justice communities.

Result: A completed corridor plan with substantial buy-in from the diverse interests of the five-state region.
